Upclose With Nature – Roman Chamomile

Roman Chamomile is one of the more popular herbs for daily use. Its popularity can be attributed in part to its lovely floral scent which many find very pleasing and soothing to the senses.

Health benefits:

  • Soothes cramps and alleviates menstrual problems.
  • Relieves stress and nervous tension.
  • Promotes sleep and rest.
  • In moderate doses, roman chamomile helps to relieve asthma in both children and adults.

  • Helps to clear up scalp problems like scalp seborrhea, itchiness, flakiness and irritation.

  • Moisturizes and softens the skin. Especially good for matured skin and skin that is prone to dryness and flakiness.

Caution: Should not be used excessively during pregnancy or lactation. Large doses may cause vomiting and stomach irritation. People who are sensitive to pollen should avoid completely. Like all herbs, roman chamomile may cause allergic reactions if used in excessive amounts. Moderation is the key.

Recipe 1: Chamomile Infusion 1

This herbal infusion can be taken orally to bring relief to fevers, headaches, cramps and indigestion. You can also make larger portions to add to your bathwaters or foot baths to soothe minor aches and pains.

Dried roman chamomile flowers                     1 teaspoon

Fresh ginger                                                    1 slice

Water                                                              1 cup

Honey to taste

How to prepare:

  1. Place water and ginger in a small earthen pot.
  2. Bring to a boil. Reduce to low heat and simmer gently for 30 minutes.
  3. Remove from the stove. Add roman chamomile flowers. Cover and infuse for 15 minutes.
  4. Add honey to taste. Serve warm

Note: During the infusion process of roman chamomile, it is essential to keep the lid on to prevent the active constituents of roman chamomile, many of which are essential oils from evaporating. For the same reason, never boil roman chamomile flowers.

Recipe 2: Chamomile Infusion 2

This simple infusion is particularly good for people experiencing irritability and mental stress as well as bloated stomachs.

Dried roman chamomile flowers                     1 teaspoon

Dried mint leaves                                            1 teaspoon

Water                                                              1 cup

Honey to taste

How to prepare:

  1. Boil water.
  2. Place roman chamomile and mint in a mug or small teapot.
  3. Pour freshly boiled water over the herbs. Cover and infuse for 15 minutes.
  4. Add honey to taste. Serve warm.

Recipe 3: Skin Soothing Tonic

For ladies: Spritz on this tonic to soften and beautify your skin after cleansing or to refresh tired complexions.

For men: Splash on as a soothing aftershave lotion.

For both genders: Use as a soothing eyewash or eye mask for tired, irritated eyes.

Dried roman chamomile flowers         1 teaspoon

Dried lavender buds                           1 teaspoon

Dried blue mallow                              1 teaspoon

Hot, freshly boiled water                    1 cup

How to prepare:

  1. Place all the herbs in a small teapot.
  2. Pour hot water over the herbs. Cover and infuse for 30 minutes.
  3. Allow the tonic to cool completely. Steep to remove the herbs.
  4. Pour the liquid into a clean glass jar or bottle. Store in the fridge.

How to use:

  1. As a skin tonic: Pour a small amount onto your palms. Pat the tonic directly onto your skin until it has been completely absorbed.
  2. As an eye mask: Saturate 4 cotton pads with the tonic. Place 2 pads on each eye. Close your eyes and relax for 20 minutes.

As an eye wash: Dilute the tonic further with ½ cup of cool water. Splash gently onto the eye area.
